The Indian River County Sheriff’s Office is proud to announce the launch of its Civilian Traffic Unit. The new unit consists of two special deputies/Civilian Traffic Assistants, who will be available throughout the county to respond to crash scenes and assist in clearing disabled vehicles from the roadway.
The CTU’s main purpose is to assist patrol deputies at crash scenes. In the very near future, and depending on the circumstances of the crash, our CTU members will also able to complete the paperwork for minor incidents such as those occurring in parking lots. This will result in roadways being cleared faster which will allow deputies to be available for other calls for service.
Motorists who find themselves out of gas, with a dead battery, or a flat tire are still encouraged to call a friend or a roadside assistance provider for help. The Civilian Traffic Assistant will be able to provide the safety of traffic warning lights and reflective cones if necessary until additional help arrives.
